Friends ask me all the time for my advice on starting a blog. Maybe you have an idea of something you want to write about, but you’re just not sure about the technical aspects of blogging and where to start. I’m here to tell you: you can do this! It’s really not that difficult to create a blog. If you created a Facebook profile at some point, you can create a blog. (And if you’ve never created a Facebook profile…why are you on the Internet?)
And if you’re a business: you need a blog. Even if it’s something you only update once a month, creating a blog will drive traffic to your website and position you as the expert in your field.
So let’s start with first things first: age to buy viagra http://skypeshield.com/skypeshield-appoints-nextiraone-as-its-distributor-for-skype-for-business-security-solutions-in-france/media/SkypeShield-SecuringSkypeForBusinessPager.pdf you need to choose which blogging platform you want to use.
- If you’re an individual who wants to write about your life, your yoga practice, your dinners, whatever – I’d recommend starting with Blogger. They offer a really easy-to-use platform, and you can have your blog up and running in less than five minutes. And it’s free. It’s even easier if you already have a Google account.
- If you think you’ll be posting mostly/only photographs, I’d recommend tumblr.
- If your blog is part of a business, and/or you might want to make more of a website out of your blog at some point, I’d recommend WordPress. (Note: WordPress.com and WordPress.org are two very different things. If you’re just starting out, you will need some technical help getting a WordPress.org site up and running – and some cash. It does cost to host a website through their .org site (but there are a lot of benefits – and that’s what I’m using to share this post), but if you’re looking for a free version, their .com site is a similar platform to Blogger.)
Once you’ve created your blog, here’s the obvious next step: write something. Just start! Don’t worry too much about the layout and how it looks…that will all come with time. Just start writing, because that’s the only essential part of having a bona fide blog.
Here’s a warning for you: blogging seems easy, but it’s not. Bloggers who have thousands of followers have been working at it for a long time, and posting consistently. Have fun with it! Don’t expect a ton of followers overnight, but if you genuinely enjoy writing, it’s a fun outlet and you’ll be more inspired to write in it if you go in with that attitude.
And finally – tell your friends! Start by sharing your blog posts on Facebook, Twitter, and any other social media platforms you might have out there. If it’s something you don’t want to share with your immediate Facebook friends, start a Facebook “like” page and invite a handful of people you feel comfortable reading your blog to “like” your page and post there when you update your blog.
So there you have it – starting a blog in 3 easy steps. Blogging can be fun, and it’s a great way to claim your little piece of the Internet. Be sure you share your new blog with me by tweeting me the link @CarrieMorley!
